Why do people quit?

Did you quit? Did you give up on your business? Did you decide "it doesn't work"?

With 8.5 years of experience behind me, I find myself reflecting on why people quit. There is a lot of material written on this subject. The message is similar - all the experts agree it exists - this trend to quit before one gets going.

I remember reading, years ago, that people tend to quit just at the corner of success.

I find some even get a taste of success and still quit.

Why? What makes a person "give up" or "change gears" just at that point of success?

There is really only one answer - Fear.

It's that simple. People are afraid, afraid of change, afraid to face the unknown. And while I can hear you saying, "I'm not afraid ... I really want to be successful", and if you are truly honest and listen carefully you will hear the fear inside you saying "Sure you want it BUT ....".

Success, to most, is a relative unknown. We all think we want it but reality is, we are scared to death of it.

Why is that? What is it people are afraid of?

Freedom? Does that scare you? The ability to make your own decisions? That's really what freedom means. Are you afraid of what money might do to you?

The real question is, how does one overcome that fear? What button does one push to turn it off? Reality is, we don't even know where the fear comes from so it's difficult to recognize and shut off.

So, how do you shut it off?

It's simple, really .... You BELIEVE and then TRUST!

You work on your belief every minute of every day until you "get it" and then you trust. That's it.

I will admit that I know this fear and facing it can be difficult ... but when you "get it", you will wonder what on earth you were ever afraid of!

When you truly understand the power you have to create whatever you want in your life, you will look forward to every moment of every day with anticipation and excitement.

You will welcome all the new that will come to you. You will become whatever you want to become, you will realize your dreams and more.

You will know and understand a freedom that is beyond words.

Ok, I can hear your burning question. Where do you start?

Everyone is going to find their favourite mentor or book or video or audio or whatever they need to help them release that fear and learn to believe and trust.

I had many mentors along my journey and one stands out above the rest for me and that is Tools to Life with Coach Devlyn Steele. My mentor for the last 6 years, Dev has developed a system that helps anyone overcome their fears in a way that really does work.

Embrace what's coming and have a great day!

I believe fear plays a huge part of why people quit. If you can picture a pie chart, it would probably represent 50 % of it and the other 50 percent comprises of other stuff like, no money, lack of committment, no determination, lack of planning and so forth.

This is good article.

Very good article Janet. If we can but remember this: Fear is temporary - Regret is permanent then we should have extra ammunition to overcome that fear and move forward. I certainly don't want to look back in regret because I was not able to overcome my fear!

Janet's comments about fear being a strong motivating factor in people quitting are essentially correct in probably as Paul says fifty to sixty percent of cases; however I believe that often people leave one path for another not necessarily out of fear but out of changes in their own perception of what is important, or their own circumstances, or sometimes even growth in their own
courage. Sometimes it takes a great deal of courage to say that a course one has been pursuing is wrong for to do so is to admit that one has made a bad choice.

I think that Shakespeare put it best when he said "to thine own self be true then thou can not be false to any man." (that may not be an exact quote...but that is the gist of it). Jenny in the previous post talks about regret. I also put forth....would not regret play a part if one continued on a course only out of a fear of being labeled a quitter.

I also would highly endorse Janet's reference to Devlyn Steele's Tools to Life course. I believe that if in pursuing that course on a daily basis one found out that changing course is one's life was essential whether it be in a relationship, a daily habit, a career, an internet business, or whatever, that is the premise on which his course is built.
Tools to Life is an excellent course for everyone that wants to really find out who they are, what they want, and what they need to do to achieve inner harmony and peace.

It is interesting that in this week's Monday morning inspiration email, Devyln hits on a point that I think those of us in Internet Marketing ofen confront as either a leader or a newbie. Devlyn says,"Like the rose, things will bloom naturally. You can’t make the rose bloom faster by shaking it or trying to force it. You have to let the positive nature of the environment create its effect on the rose over time." Too often we try to force people to move ahead faster than their invididual psyche will tolerate and we then become a catalyst for their quitting or failing.

As leaders we often aren't aware of this and out of our genuine desire to have our members succeed we push, we cajole, we offer incentives, we get tough, and we get frustrated. As newbies we become afraid of failing. of disappointing, of being rejected etc.
One thing I am sure we would all agree with are that ones' success in marketing in both cold and warm markets and in life is built on relationships. The one thing that I have learned in my seventy plus years on this earth is that relationsips are like a garden. You plant the seeds, you enrich the soil, you water as often as needed, and you protect the tender plants from damage by weeds, pests, etc. You certainly don't expose them to hail, neglect, or try and pick the fruits too soon. The harvest will come in its own time.

I think that there is a law that Esther and Jerry Hicks talk about in their book The Law of Attraction that sort of sums up what I am trying to say. "The Third Law, the Art of Allowing says, I am that which I am, and I am willing to allow all others to be that which they are."

I love the feedback and comments, you guys are great!

Fear is in all of us and drives us, whether we face it or not is really the issue.

Fear is what holds us back from attaining the success we want, it holds us back from choosing the right path because we fear what we don't know.

Keep the discussion going ... someone reading this will have an AHA moment!

Fear is fear ...embrace life, embrace the unknown, be all you want to be.

The article is killer content Janet! Good work. Fear is such a troublesome thing to overcome. I can look back and see where I have allowed fear to stop me dead in my tracks and become immobilized in my business.

Beth, I love your comment, I can really feel the truth of what you are saying. I just started on the internet about a year and a half ago and consider myself a newbie without a lot of tech knowlege, however, I am learning and hope to keep learning until I kick off. (btw, I listen to Abraham-Hicks CD's every morning for inspiration!)

I still don't have a website, or know how to build one, and can't give away an ebook without an uploader...but I am getting there, all the things I have learned from sitting back quietly and watching are too numerous to mention.

I feel now that I am ready for action. I want everyone to read my testamonial that I will write at the end of 2008 how a welfare mom went from dirt broke to being financialy self sufficent!

Thank you again Janet for such a great post.

That´s great thoughts, Janet. (Love the way you promoted this post ;-))

I can remember about one year ago when I started niche marketing(next to MLM) at first I fell in love with the concept and this field sucked me in like a black hole. I had a plan and I imagined it to be wonderful to make money by selling other people´s stuff.

Weeks passed without results but then-my first sale= $ 90!

That scared me, everything was so unreal until that point.

I admit, this is a positive fear I surely were able to deal with ;-)

My worst fear was always investing in advertising and not seeing results.

And even more significantly, it´s your private surrounding that makes you have fear.

I don´t have the luck to have a partner who is behind my efforts, it´s more the opposite of that.

Same with friends, all that counts for them is "how much do you make?"

Without seeing the effort, self-education, investment of time and money. This is a very destructive question when you are not already making money!

One has to stay focussed no matter what, negative results are positive in the end in terms of trail and error.

Don´t give up!

The greatest fear should be to quit when success is just around the corner. You said it Janet.

I think one reason people quit is because of all of the verbal ambush to their self esteem that they get from a lot of the so called 'already successful' people.

This is never talked about either, but having been in this business for over 4 years and not having made any decent income until about 1 year ago, I have seen a lot of the verbal garbage thrown my way that I am sure happens to a lot of other people also.

People will try very hard to make this internet marketing thing work, and a lot of the feedback from the so called gurus are things like:

"The reason you don't make any money is because you don't do anything".

This comment here is made by gurus to people that they don't even know, much less how much time they do put in this internet marketing thing.

I know first hand because I would get this comment a lot while I was working over 60 hours a week on internet marketing.

Then there is the one that goes:

"You don't make any money because you don't buy my stuff or take my advice"

Well, no one guru has all the good advice. I have picked up various tips and helpful advice from several gurus, and yet a lot of them want you to believe that they have the only viable way to make money online.

Then there is this one, which is probably the one I hate the most, which goes:

"You don't make any money because you are a freebie seeker".

This is obviously a comment with an agenda. Oh sure, ther will always be some that don't want to pay their dues, but most of the time when this comment is made, it's made by a guru that is making a last ditch effort to make a sale.

Just because a person doesn't buy, does not make them a freebie seeker.

It's more likely because the person has no use for what is being offered.

Or they can't afford what is being offered.

Or maybe even because the guru who is accusing someone of being a freebie seeker has just not done a good enough job to give a potential customer a good enough reason to part with their hard earned money.

I don't know what it is in the internet marketing field, but the entreprenuers in that field seem to have a totally differernt business phylosophy than the people running brick and mortor businesses.

The merchants that run a brick and mortor business seem to appreciate their customer's business and are grateful for their business, but the internet marketers seem to be total ingrates and don't know how to treat the very people that put food on their table.

Well, I think that's one of the lesser known reasons why people quit.
